Our First Dance Song – So Many to Choose From! Yeah!! :)

Charlie and I, needless to say, are in LOVE with music. As dancers, it’s the sound of our soul while dance is the movement that represents it. The down beat, the snare, the pattern of beats, the melody, the lyrics…how it makes dancers move is just beautiful. BEA.U.TI.FUL. When it’s done as a duet or group…don’t even get me started! The way the music has them move as a unit, it’s a God given gift to be able to experience that.

So, this first dance idea as husband and wife – we want it to mean something. We wanted to share with our guests the gratitude, emotions, thoughts, feelings, and most importantly – the love – we feel.

We’ve been thinking about that moment “when the music plays and it’s just the 2 of us on the dance floor” a lot. Actually, since the moment we were engaged. One of the first things we thought about was, “What song should we pick for our first dance?” Well, we found it and are so excited to share it with everyone. I may even need to make a costume change for this because it means that much to us! :D

At the beginning of this week we started talking about the song again since we’re going to have to start brainstorming soon. The song we originally picked was “Until the End of Time” by Justin Timberlake and Beyonce. Charlie and I don’t have “a song” so we had the pleasure of having a plethora of songs to choose from, an option I’d much rather have. We eventually decided against the song because we felt it was too slow for what we wanted to do with the dance itself.

So I looked to the world of social media for some help, and I got some good suggestions. Here are some of my suggestions for great first dance songs:

- Until the End of Time by Justin Timberlake (duh!)
- Lucky by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat
- Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo╩╗ole (Here’s my current favorite Glee version by Matthew Morrison)
- You’re Just too Good to be True by Lauryn Hill
- If I Ain’t Got you by Alicia Keys
- Hey Soul Sister by Train

I can go on but I think I’ll stop there.

So what was on our criteria for our first dance song?

  1. Something that went with our personality.
  2. Something more upbeat – definitely not a “Slow Jam,” but definitely not too fast of a dance beat. Something more groovy.
  3. Good lyrics.
  4. A song by an artist we admire.
  5. Something romantic.

So are you dying yet? Wanna know the song? Well no, I can’t tell you. :P Charlie and I agreed to make it a surprise for our guests on the wedding day. But I can give you 3 clues.

Clue #1: I mentioned something about the artist/one of his songs somewhere in this post.
Clue #2: The artist is not a 1-hit-wonder.
Clue #3: Charlie and I have always loved the song.
Clue #4: The artist had a hit single when we first started dating, and it was the first song we actually danced to together.

You can try to guess, but I definitely won’t tell you if you’re right or wrong. :P As a consolation prize I’ll end this post with some dance vids with me and Charlie in it, can you spot us? :D

Cheers everyone! Happy Thursday!
